What a wonderful Milestone Celebration! The weather cooperated, many people came, the food was good and we got great pictures. Habitat homeowners, partner families, community partners, longtime volunteers and new volunteers – some who worked on the first home and also worked on the 100th home- attended one or all three events.

Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity is so grateful for the faithfulness of its families and volunteers. Without you, our organization would not be building affordable homes, improving communities or providing the opportunity of home ownership and hope to modest income families.

Two more Habitat homes will be dedicated in Waterloo on Thursday May 26th.

The Habitat home at 924 Conger, a Neighborhood Stabilization Program rehab will be dedicated with the Floth Family at 4:00. The second Habitat home dedication will be at 4:45 with the Phillips Family at 419 Florence Street. This home is located off Independence Avenue and is in a Habitat neighborhood of homes built in the 1990’s. Both homes are examples of how Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity recycles and updates older homes in Waterloo. Everyone is invited to view Habitat homes and to be part of the celebration of “building homes with families and volunteers” and improving neighborhoods.
Fifteen families have moved into Iowa Heartland Habitat homes since July 2010.

Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1990 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International and is a nonprofit organization seeking to eliminate poverty housing, build stronger families and improve neighborhoods. IHHFH currently builds or rehabs homes in three Iowa counties – Black Hawk, Bremer and Butler.
Habitat invites people from all walks of life to work together in partnership to help build homes with families in need of better housing. Locally, Iowa Heartland Habitat completes 10-12 homes annually. We will celebrate 100 homes completed with families and volunteers on August 12th, 2011.
Houses are built with volunteer labor, homeowner Sweat Equity hours and tax-deductible donations of money and materials. The Habitat Houses are then sold to Habitat families with affordable ZERO interest mortgages. These mortgage proceeds are then used by the Habitat affiliate to build more affordable homes with more qualified families.
On a global level since 1976, Habitat International has provided over 2 million people with safe, decent affordable shelter by building 400,000 homes in more than 3,000 communities around the world.
Habitat is 6th largest builder on U.S. magazine’s top 100 list
Habitat for Humanity International has been ranked as the sixth largest homebuilder in the United States, according to an annual survey by Builder magazine. This is the second consecutive year Habitat has ranked in the top 10. Habitat assisted 6,032 families with new or renovated homes in the U.S. in 2010. The larger number was partly due to Habitat’s Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative. Through the initiative, Habitat’s U.S. affiliates buy and rehabilitate foreclosed properties to turn them into affordable housing for low-income families.

How-to clinics prepare Habitat volunteers for National Women Build Week

Waterloo, IA – In the days leading up to Mother’s Day, construction crews of female volunteers will be pounding nails and raising walls at Habitat for Humanity construction sites across the country in recognition of National Women Build Week, April 30 – May 8. To help volunteers get a jump-start on their building skills, Lowe’s, underwriter of Women Build and sponsor of National Women Build Week, is hosting a “how-to” clinic on April 28, 2011 at its Waterloo store.

The Women Build program recruits, educates and inspires women to build and advocate for simple, decent and affordable houses in their communities. Lowe’s is committing more than $1.3 million to National Women Build Week and providing $5,000 Lowe’s store gift cards and event support materials to more than 250 Habitat affiliates. Lowe’s has also developed an 18-piece women’s toolkit under the Habitat Women Build brand and will pay 10% of the product’s net sales to Habitat for Humanity.

Women Build how-to clinics are open to women interested in volunteering at any local Women Build. There is no cost to enroll and Lowe’s provides all supplies. Each of the clinic(s), led by Lowe’s store employees, will teach home construction basics to volunteers and offer opportunities to practice new skills. Women will also learn tool safety tips. The clinics are designed to help build the confidence volunteers need on the build site.

National Women Build Week April 30 – May 8

Waterloo, IA, DATE – In the days leading up to Mother’s Day construction crews of female volunteers will raise their hammers at Habitat for Humanity construction sites across the country in recognition of National Women Build Week, April 30 through May 8. Lowe’s and Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity are looking for local women to volunteer for a day at a Black Hawk County Habitat construction site during this nine-day event. Construction or home improvement experience is not necessary.

Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build Work Day is on Thursday, May 5. Volunteers are needed from 8:30am to 12:00pm and 12:30pm, to 3:30pm. Volunteers will be working at 726 Willow Street in Waterloo. A skilled Site Supervisor will be leading volunteers in hanging drywall. Lowe’s Home Improvement Store in Waterloo will be offering a “How to Hang Drywall” class on Thursday, April 28 from 6:00 to 7:00pm; free of charge. The Mother’s Day timeframe was selected for its significance to many volunteers. Families with children make up a staggering number of those in need of adequate housing. More than 12 million children - one in six - live in poverty housing in the United States alone.

To date, female volunteers have built more than 1,800 Habitat houses nationwide during National Women Build Week. Locally, Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity has built more than four Women Build houses.

National Women Build Week challenges women to devote at least one day in the effort to help eliminate poverty housing. The event, now in its fourth year, has drawn more than 20,000 female volunteers from all 50 states.

Lowe’s is contributing more than $1.3 million to National Women Build Week and providing $5,000 Lowe’s gift cards and building materials to more than 250 Habitat affiliates. National Women Build Week is one of the major initiatives supported through Lowe’s five-year, $20 million pledge to Habitat.

As the underwriter of the Women Build program since 2004, Lowe’s conducts how-to clinics at stores to teach women construction skills and empower them to support Habitat projects across the country.

Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity Home Dedications

Join Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity for the first two home dedications of 2011 on Monday, February 28 starting at 4:30pm.

Habitat for Humanity has partnered with Waterloo’s Community Development Office to secure funding from the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) which allows community partners to purchase foreclosed properties and revitalize neighborhoods. The home at 422 Bertch Avenue in Waterloo is the third rehabbed home in Waterloo funded by NSP. This improved property will be a simple, decent and affordable home for Ivonne Troche and her family who were approved for the Habitat program in late 2009. Help Ivonne and Habitat celebrate the completion of this home by attending the home dedication at 4:30pm.

The fourth NSP funded home to be completed is located at 1333 Leavitt Street in Waterloo and will be purchased by Andrea Magee and her family. The previous home was badly damaged in a fire and demolished in August, 2010 laying the groundwork for a new Habitat home. For over a year, the home sat vacant with trees and bushes overtaking the property. With the help of Habitat, NSP and many volunteers, this new home has truly improved the neighborhood. Help Andrea and Habitat celebrate the completion of this home by attending the home dedication at 5:30pm.

Want to learn more about the 20 year old local Non Profit Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity? The first Habitat Lunch & Learn will take place on Tuesday, January 4th from noon – 1 pm at the Habitat office at 803 W 5^th Street, Waterloo. Hot soup will be served. This educational lunch event will give everyone more information about non-profits in general and specifically about how Habitat for Humanity continues to build homes with families and volunteers in our local communities.

Habitat for Humanity reaches milestone: 400,000 homes built or repaired since 1976

More than 2 million people around the world served through better housing

Waterloo IA –Habitat for Humanity surpassed its 400,000 house milestone during its most recent fiscal year. Since the nonprofit organization was founded in 1976, its self-help, hand-up model has resulted in rehabbed, repaired or new housing for more than 2 million people worldwide.

Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity is part of this global effort. Since 1990 Iowa Heartland Habitat has built, rehabbed or repaired 91 homes.

Ninety-one Habitat homes have been renovated or built new by Iowa Heartland Habitat volunteers and families in its 20 year history of building affordable homes. More than half of the Habitat homes are located in Waterloo where Habitat for Humanity continues to be the local contractor that builds the largest number of affordable homes annually. In 2010, Habitat for Humanity International became the 8th largest builder of private homes in theUSA.

Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity is continuing its efforts to help families in need of decent, affordable housing. We are happy to have helped Habitat for Humanity reach this important milestone in bettering communities across the country,” said Linda Morgan Director local Habitat. “With continued support of our sponsors and volunteers, we’ll address affordable housing needs in Black Hawk, Bremer, and Butler Counties”.

In fiscal year 2010, Habitat for Humanity served a record 74,960 families worldwide through a combination of new construction, rehabilitation and repairs. Habitat also helped an additional 6,355 families establish legal rights to a house or land, and provided more than 46,964 individuals with technical assistance ranging from legal help to construction advice or training.

“We are pleased that even in this difficult economy, Habitat for Humanity has been able to help a record number of families around the world have a better place to live,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “Our affiliates are the backbone of Habitat’s efforts. Their hard work and dedication have made this milestone possible. We are grateful for the work of Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity.”

Habitat for Humanity celebrated its 300,000^th home in 2008, its 200,000^th home in 2005 and the 100,000^th home in 2000.

By 2013, Habitat for Humanity hopes to assist 100,000 families worldwide annually with new or improved housing.

Want to learn more about the 20 year old local Non Profit Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity? The first Habitat Lunch & Learn will take place on Tuesday, December 7^th from noon – 1 pm at the Habitat office at 803 W 5^th Street, Waterloo. Hot soup will be served. This educational lunch event will give everyone more information about non-profits in general and specifically about how Habitat for Humanity continues to build homes with families and volunteers in our local communities.

In 2010, Iowa Heartland HFH has completed twelve Habitat homes in four towns – Parkersburg, Cedar Falls, Waterloo and Waverly - in three different counties - Black Hawk, Butler and Bremer.

For the past 20 years Habitat has built homes with 95 families, housing 400 people.

The common denominator all share is being the recipients of your generous donations of time and money. With your help children in Habitat homes have made the honor role, attended colleges and have a better prospect for a fulfilling adult life.

Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to eliminate poverty housing and improve communities by building simple, decent, affordable homes with families and volunteers.

In 2011, Habitat’s goal is to build 12 homes with families who have already qualified and are working towards home ownership. Only with your continued generosity can Iowa Heartland HFH continue our mission.

89th and 90th Habitat home dedications October 23rd and 29th

For immediate release – 89^th and 90^th Habitat home dedications

Simple, affordable single family housing is what Habitat does best and for the past 20 years, Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity has been doing just that in the northeast Iowa counties of Black Hawk, Bremer and Butler. The 89^th and 90^th Habitat homes will be dedicated on October 23^rd in Cedar Falls and on October 29^th in Parkersburg.

The Cedar Falls home dedication for the Derhammer family will be Saturday, October 23^rd at 3 pm at 1937 Clay Street. Because of a partnership with the City of Cedar Falls, Iowa Heartland is able to build affordable homes in Cedar Falls - this will be the 16^th Cedar Falls Habitat home built with families and volunteers since Habitat home building started in Cedar Falls in 2001. A new, 3 bedroom, one story home now sits on what was once a junk-strewn lot with a dilapidated house.

UNI students from the Habitat Chapter at UNI will be on hand to present a donation of $3500 to Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity. Students, local volunteers, the Derhammer friends and family have been working on the home since June 2010. Please join us in our celebration.

Dreams come true on Friday, October 29^th at 5 pm for brother and sister, Karen and Dana Anderson when the dedication of their new Habitat home at 809 4^th Street in Parkersburg is held. The 2008 tornado blew away the home that once sat on this lot and also injured both Karen and Dana in their rental home several blocks away. Iowa Heartland HFH is excited to be helping Parkersburg rebuild and to be a partner with the Anderson Family in getting them back on solid ground with their new, accessible Habitat home. Many local churches and individuals helped build this second Butler County Habitat home and a grant from the State Housing Trust Fund administered by INRHC helped fund the construction costs. Habitat friends throughout Butler County are invited to attend.

John Deere Blitz Build: Week One, Day One

Volunteers from John Deere’s Supply Management Department are hard at work for the first day of the Blitz Build. Lead by Construction Manager, Troy Blakestad, volunteers are raising walls built and delivered by the Eldora Training School; a long time partner of Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity’s Home Dedication Number 88

1137 Leavitt

With the reconstruction of 1137 Leavitt Street in Waterloo, Habitat for Humanity will celebrate its 88^th home completion over the span of 20 years. On Friday, August 27 at 3:00, Habitat will dedicate this home with Jackie White and her family. Dedications are open to the public as well as volunteers, donors, neighbors and Habitat partner families.

The purchase and reconstruction of 1137 Leavitt Street was made possible by the Neighborhood Stabilization Program which grants funding to purchase foreclosed homes and revitalize neighborhoods. This is the first of many homes purchased with funding from the Neighborhood Stabilization Program to be completed in Waterloo. Habitat for Humanity will begin its second home on Leavitt Street in Waterloo, early in September.

John Deere Blitz Build: Week One

Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity is partnering with the Supply Management Department at John Deere to Blitz Build two Habitat homes in preparation for interior winter work. From August 30 to September 3, John Deere volunteers will frame walls, roof, hang exterior siding and install doors and windows; completely drying in the home. During week one of the Blitz Build, there will be 10 different volunteers each day working at 1218 Bauch Street in Waterloo. A partnership with Waterloo’s Community Development Office makes HOME funds available for affordable housing in Waterloo and Iowa Heartland HFH was able to purchase a dilapidated home, have it demolished and will help revitalize the neighborhood with a new Habitat home. Grace Reformed Church located on Maxwell Street near the build site, has also partnered with Habitat for Humanity to allow volunteers to use their church for snacks and lunch as well as parking.

Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity is busy building homes in Black Hawk, Bremer and Butler Counties with families and volunteers. In August, Habitat will celebrate the completion of its 86th, 87th and 88th home. Help Habitat celebrate building simple, decent and affordable homes by attending the following home dedications:

On Wednesday, August 18 at 4:00, Habitat will celebrate the completion its “2010 Church Build” at 330 Oneida Street in Waterloo. Volunteers from churches throughout the Cedar Valley have come together to build this home. The Waterloo Home Funds grant from the Waterloo Community Development office was used to build this home. This is the third Habitat home built in the Jackson/Oneida Street neighborhood in Waterloo.

The Habitat 2010 Women Build project located at 659 Lunar Lane in Waterloo will also be celebrating its home dedication on August 18 at 5:00. Women Build challenges women from all walks of life to help eliminate poverty housing and is the 4th home built by women in Waterloo. Waterloo Home Funds were also used to build this home.

Habitat will continue to build throughout the year in Parkersburg, Cedar Falls and Waterloo. Applications for homeownership are available at the Habitat office or on the Habitat website, www.heartlandhfh.org.
